I may have expressed how much I enjoyed Gomez as the Master last season. I may have deafened my husband on the reveal. I may have bounced up and down a little bit. And I never for one second thought that we’d seen the last of her in ‘Death in Heaven.’
I did not expect her return to come so soon, and I am not in the least disappointed.
I observe some people seem to feel strongly about what we call her. ‘Missy’ seems to annoy them, for whatever reason. No one seems to like ‘The Mistress’ – nor should they, and no one – not even the character herself – has suggested it as a name. She chose Missy as a variant on ‘The Master’ and to deceive the Doctor – and probably to be annoying as well, obviously a success based on these fans’ reactions. The Master loves to be annoying.
Personally I don’t have a problem with ‘Missy.’ It’s an easier shorthand than ‘Gomez!Master’ when speaking solely of this incarnation. Obviously we’re not going to use it in reference to the character as a whole. And I don’t know how much it’s going to be used in-universe either: the Doctor has rarely ever called his nemesis by name. And when he did, the Master so enjoyed being called ‘Master,’ it’s unlikely she’d give up that thrill to be called ‘Missy.’ The Doctor might call her Missy to irritate her, though. Tables turned.
It all looks like great fun. Hettie Macdonald, who directed ‘Blink,’ is helming the two-parter. Kate Stewart will reappear, and the Shadow Proclamation, it seems. Later in the season we get a whole host of interestingly-named guest stars: India Ria Amarteifio, Dasharn Anderson, Harki Bhambra, Demi Papaminas. Do these suggest a diverse cast, or a particular location?
It’s sad that we will probably have to wait until August for this. 😦
